VOLGA SHAPERS

The people, entities, and events that have shaped Volga, Iowa

170+ Years of Volga shaping us

The town of Volga, Iowa has been in existence since 1851.  It is situated in Sperry Township of Clayton County.  When Volga was laid out, the survey was made by Ezra Hurd, with the proprietors being William H., Mary Jane, and A. L. Gould.

William H. Gould, the principal proprietor, came here in 1851 and established his claim on parts of Sections 3 and 10, and built a saw mill during the summer.  The mill was different in kind from any other in existence.  Because of this, he received a patent from the government.  William moved west in 1864 after selling most of his property to Henry White.

The town was incorporated in 1896.  The mayor was J.D. Welch; Clerk was O.R. Brooks; council members were E.W. White, C. Massey, W.F. Munger, A.C. Keeling, and M. Phillips.
